The formula

c = √(a² + b²)

In a right triangle, the two shorter sides are the legs and the longest side, opposite the right angle, is the hypotenuse. Square each leg, add the two results, and take the square root to find the hypotenuse. The same relationship rearranges to find a missing leg when the hypotenuse is known.

A worked example

A right triangle has legs of 3 cm and 4 cm. Find the hypotenuse.

Square each leg: 3² = 9 and 4² = 16.

Add them: 9 + 16 = 25.

Take the square root: √25 = 5.

Hypotenuse = 5 cm

The step students most often drop is the square root at the end, which leaves them with 25 instead of 5. The other thing to check is which side is the hypotenuse: it is always the longest side and always sits opposite the right angle, never between the two legs.

Sample problems

  1. A right triangle has legs of 6 cm and 8 cm. Find the hypotenuse. (10 cm)
  2. A right triangle has legs of 5 cm and 12 cm. Find the hypotenuse. (13 cm)
  3. A ladder leans so its base is 9 m out and its top is 12 m up. How long is the ladder? (15 m)
  4. A right triangle has legs of 8 cm and 15 cm. Find the hypotenuse. (17 cm)

In the tool you set the range the leg lengths are drawn from, so each worksheet is a fresh set. Keep the range on clean values for whole-number answers, or widen it to bring in decimals.

Who it's for

The Pythagorean theorem usually arrives in grades 8 to 9, once squares and square roots are familiar. It suits classroom practice, homework, and revision before a test, and it connects naturally to later work on distance and trigonometry.

How to make one

  1. Open Formula Worksheet Maker.
  2. Drag the Pythagorean Theorem formula onto the sheet.
  3. Set the range for the two leg lengths.
  4. Generate the student page, the questions PDF, and the answer key.
  5. Print it, or save as a PDF and reuse it. Regenerate for a fresh set anytime.

Questions people ask

Does the worksheet come with an answer key?
Yes. Each sheet has a matching key, and the student page checks every answer against it.
Can I get whole-number answers only?
Choosing leg ranges built from common Pythagorean triples, such as 3-4-5 or 5-12-13, keeps the hypotenuse a whole number.
Can students solve for a missing leg too?
The built-in formula finds the hypotenuse from the two legs. For a missing leg, students rearrange the same relationship by hand.
Is it free to print?
Yes. The tool is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account. Print or save each worksheet as a PDF.
